The Rotolight NEO is available either as a standalone unit or as part of a comprehensive kit similar to the one we evaluated. This package features three NEO lights, each with their own stand, mounting tools, and light modifiers, all housed in a rugged, wheeled hard-shell case for easy transport.
Our Experience
We brought the Rotolight kit with us to a media launch event to put it to work alongside the new Sony a6500. Our aim was to complete a full review during the trip, which involved transforming our hotel room into an improvised studio. While the room had decent ambient lighting, we preferred having full creative control. To that end, we blocked out natural light and supplemented our setup entirely with the Rotolights. For accurate results, especially for our product shots and A-roll footage, we conducted much of our filming at night, relying solely on the kit’s lighting capabilities.
Transporting the kit was relatively easy. Though compact enough to carry on a plane, we opted to check it due to the volume of our gear. This provided an excellent opportunity to assess the durability of the case. It emerged unscathed after flights between Sacramento and Austin.
Back at Videomaker’s studio, we continued testing. The space is designed to block out all external light, offering a controlled environment to assess lighting tools. We shot two subjects—a poinsettia and a trophy—and found the lights to be quick to set up and effective in a three-point lighting configuration. The barn doors were essential for backlighting; without them, the lights lacked the necessary intensity and angle flexibility. An overhead arm would have added more versatility to the setup.
The NEOs are sufficiently powerful for medium close-up interviews or single-subject framing. For broader scenes, their output is limited. The provided diffusers are helpful for softening and spreading the light, especially since the lights must be placed close to the subject for optimal exposure.
What’s Included
Beyond the trio of lights, the kit includes several practical add-ons. The light stands are designed to fit inside the hard case, though returning them to their slots after use can be a tight squeeze. While compact and portable, the stands aren’t especially robust. They held up well during our tests but might not stand up to long-term, heavy-duty use.
Also included are adapters that allow the lights to be mounted on both traditional stands and a camera’s cold/hot shoe, with 360-degree rotation supported via ball joint mounts. This makes positioning straightforward and highly adjustable.
The layout inside the case is extremely precise—everything has a specific place and only fits one way. While this ensures the gear is secure during transit, it can make packing a bit tedious. Additionally, the case emitted a strong, unpleasant odor when first opened, an issue we’ve encountered before with similar cases like those for the Atomos Shogun Flame and Inferno. It may fade over time, but initially, it’s quite off-putting.
Build Quality and Features
The NEO’s casing is constructed from plastic, as are the controls for brightness, color temperature, and power. While the build feels solid overall, the plastic material might affect its long-term durability. We also noticed that locating the power button wasn’t intuitive, which added minor frustration during setup.
One standout feature is its ability to operate using six AA batteries. Paired with rechargeable AAs, this makes the lights well-suited for fieldwork without access to power. We recommend combining them with JOBY tripods for enhanced mounting flexibility, allowing for creative lighting angles and placement.
The lights offer a TLCI score of 91 and a CRI above 95—acceptable but not exceptional for professional color fidelity. Users can adjust the temperature between 3150K and 6300K using the bi-color LED system. While there’s no noticeable drop in quality at different temperatures, the lights do create visible reflections on shiny surfaces due to their circular shape. Nevertheless, this distinctive design adds a touch of style to the setup.
Marketplace
Whether purchased solo or in a kit, the NEO faces stiff competition in the crowded LED lighting market. Many options are battery-powered and affordable, but not all deliver on performance. Let’s examine how the NEO compares to two other products with similar specs and pricing: the ikan Mylo and the Litepanels Lykos Bi-Color.
The ikan Mylo retails for around $550, supports bi-color output, includes barn doors, and can operate on battery power for mobility. It comes with a yoke mount that fits standard baby pins—ideal for studio use. Its CRI rating exceeds 95, similar to the NEO’s 95–98 range. While it’s a bit larger, the Mylo is not currently available in a bundled kit with accessories or a case. For those who don’t require adjustable color temperature, a fixed version saves about $50.
The Litepanels Lykos Bi-Color is available both individually and as a kit. A complete kit runs around $2,250—roughly $550 more than the NEO set. If you forego batteries, the price drops, though you’ll lose portable functionality. The Lykos mounts using a standard 1/4-20 thread, just like the NEO. Its kit includes stands, power adapters, batteries, light modifiers, and mounting hardware. However, its proprietary batteries are harder to replace than AAs. The Lykos boasts a CRI of 95 at 5600K and 98 at 3200K, putting it on par with the NEO in terms of light quality.
Recommendation
The Rotolight NEO kit delivers compact, high-quality lighting with convenient battery operation—up to three hours using AA cells. Its circular design is visually unique, though it may reflect in shiny subjects. While we would appreciate more brightness, the overall performance and portability make this kit a solid investment that we can confidently recommend.
